Points
pointscatsuniversity challengeoverheardIt occurred to me while gathering things to thoughts for this week note that I should really embrace using a list, or bullet points, or at least try to be more brief. So here we go, in no particular order, things and thoughts that happened during this past week:
-
I've been writing more Scala, which has been good fun. There's something quite nice about having enough of an idea of how things should work and then map that knowledge to a new language. I miss
console.log('bum')
though. -
You know what hasn't been so fun? Trying to get two external monitors working with a new macbook m1. I'm officially giving up, for a while.
-
I continue to slowly collect random toys from ebay, this time I've got a transporter from The Next Generation. It is incredibly satisfying to clean and restore them. I went down a rabbit hole on youtube about tips for cleaning action figures...that was a lot.
-
The lack of a second external monitor means Willow isn't particularly happy. She spends more time trying to barge onto team Teams calls. Yes, that's right, Teams. Try getting used to using the microsoft and outlook world after using google, gmail and google calendar for 7 years is hard. I was reminded of the battle with my second monitor because a very kind Matt sent me a wonderful stamp that shows a lovely illustration of a cat up to mischief, like Willow, on a desk. *note to self, show a picture

You forget just how many things are new when you start a new job. New laptop, new email address, new calendar, new ways of working, new ways of communicating, new codebase, new languages, new building, and all the little things between.
-
The other week my Dad got his voice back.
-
My resting heart rate has gone down in the last few weeks. This is somewhat related to the above. A voice is an important thing.
-
I got webmentions working in the background, but stopped short of doing anything to show them to anyone. That was a fun exercise.
-
I've been watching a lost of Deep Space Nine. It has pretty much grabbed top spot as my favourite of the Star Treks.
-
I've been taking trains a bit more recently, which has brought with it lots of great opportunities to stare out the window and watch life fly by. It has also meant I overhear things and I'm going to share some of things I've heard later.
-
I really miss the FT sometimes. By that I mean I miss people. It is strange and exciting to be new somewhere. I don't have the context for things, it takes longer to do things. I also just really miss FT slack, I miss talking about Star Trek whilst looking at a tech incident and typing out a typo I made or something I overheard.
-
I've been reading: The Power of Fun: Why Fun Is the Key to a Happy and Healthy Life by Catherine Price. I thought I was doing alright with fun, but there's something about recognising when something is fun and being in the moment.
-
I spent the weekend lining a piece of the wall above our built in bookshelf in our bedroom so that I could paint it. I did it whilst listening to the Archers. Sundays at 10am are one of my favourite radio times, switching between The Archers and Cerys Matthews on Radio 6 ticks a lot of boxes.
-
It is quiz night, I wonder how many questions I can manage. Willow and Bear really love the bubbles and zappy lines in the intro to University Challenge. University Challenge challenge - down your tea every time the words 'We're going to take a picture round' is followed by 'in the following map' OR 'We're going to take a music round' is followed by 'what opera is this from'.
-
Oh, if Scala and JavaScript were people, I wonder what they would be like.
Overheard this week:
"We caught up and really sorted the men from the boys"
"I don’t like to sound big headed but I was the best in the age group"
On repeat
I always return to this song. If you've got a chance, listen to anything from the Pillow Queens, you'll be glad you did.
- Next: Inside you there are two wolves...
- Previous: Making things.
